In his letter, NYS Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball urged the agency for details and further clarification on a new federal assistance program to buy agricultural products for food banks, expressing concerns with the proposed direct payments to farmers.

Ball said a review by his department found funding disparities for the dairy industry in the agency’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP).

The CFAP program, Ball said, is meant to build on Governor Cuomo’s Nourish NY program.

Ball is asking the agency for additional emergency assistance for New York dairy farmers, who make up the largest sector of the state’s agriculture industry and are the fourth largest producers of dairy in the country.
