Pāmu boosts sheep genetics at Waikite farm to improve productivity, resilience, and sustainability in New Zealand’s livestock sector.
NZ Farm Pushes Genetics to Transform Sheep Sector
Waikite Farm sells around 354 FocusPrime rams externally and 254 internally among other Pāmu farms. The rams sold internally are all in their top 2% and those sold externally are in the top 5%.

Pāmu’s Waikite operation leverages advanced breeding to boost productivity, resilience, and long-term farm profitability.

Pāmu is advancing a strategic push in livestock genetics through its Waikite farm, positioning sheep breeding innovation as a cornerstone of future farm performance. The initiative reflects a broader effort to enhance productivity, resilience, and profitability in New Zealand’s pastoral systems, particularly as the sector faces pressure from climate change, land-use competition, and declining wool returns.

At the core of this approach is the application of advanced genetic selection, where traits such as growth rate, meat quality, fertility, and disease resistance are prioritized. Through its subsidiary Focus Genetics and collaboration with public research institutions, Pāmu is developing flocks that can better withstand environmental stress while maintaining strong commercial outputs. This science-led model aims to deliver consistent gains across the value chain.

The Waikite operation exemplifies how on-farm genetic programs are being translated into measurable results. By combining diverse breeding lines and performance recording, the farm is producing animals with improved efficiency and adaptability. These efforts align with wider industry goals of reducing input costs, improving animal health, and strengthening market competitiveness in global protein markets.

A key element of the strategy is the integration of genetics into commercial farming systems, ensuring that improvements are not confined to research environments but applied at scale. This includes selecting animals suited to specific land conditions and production goals, reinforcing the link between genetic merit and farm profitability. The approach also supports the development of livestock with lower emissions and better environmental performance.

Ultimately, Pāmu’s investment in sheep genetics underscores a long-term vision for sustainable livestock production. By focusing on innovation, data-driven breeding, and collaboration, the Waikite farm initiative highlights how genetic advancement can help future-proof the sheep sector while delivering tangible economic benefits to farmers and the wider agribusiness industry.
