Specialty dairy distributer Abbey Specialty Foods is recalling select batches of Wicklow Gold Nettle & Chive and Wicklow Gold Cheddar Tomato & Herb cheese due to potential listeria contamination.
Affected products were sold in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Ohio and Colorado.
The recall was initiated after Wicklow Farmhouse Cheese LTD notified Abbey Specialty Foods of a potential listeria contamination.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, retailers who have received the recalled products have removed the products from their shelves.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse health events related to this recall as of Jan. 6.
The FDA advises consumers who have any products included in this recall to return them for a refund or dispose of them immediately.
Listeria monocytogene is a bacteria that can be found in soil, water, decaying vegetation and animals, the Food and Drug Administration said.
When people eat food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, they can develop a disease called listeriosis which can range in severity.
Mild symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, while severe symptoms range headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions and even death.
Listeria infections can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
