Strong international demand is helping absorb expanding milk supplies, preventing inventory buildups despite robust global production growth.
U.S. dairy production continued its upward trajectory in April, growing approximately 2.8% year over year and surpassing Ever.Ag’s earlier forecast of 2.1%. The stronger-than-expected increase reflects a broader global trend, with milk production also rising sharply in key exporting regions such as Europe and New Zealand.
According to Ever.Ag Vice President Ryan Yonkman, the increase in milk output is occurring across multiple major dairy-producing countries. European production has expanded by roughly 4%, while New Zealand has reported growth of around 6%, adding to the global supply picture facing dairy markets.
Despite higher production levels, the U.S. dairy sector has avoided a domestic oversupply thanks to exceptional export performance. March cheese exports reached record levels, rising 30% compared to the previous year, helping channel additional milk solids into international markets and supporting overall market balance.
The strong export flow has also prevented inventory accumulation. Current cheese and butter stocks remain below the five-year average, an encouraging sign for the dairy industry. While Class III milk prices remain relatively modest in the $16 to $17 range, those lower prices have improved the competitiveness of U.S. dairy products in global trade.
Industry observers are now looking toward seasonal demand drivers that could further strengthen the market. Summer consumption of ice cream and grilling-related dairy products is expected to increase, while events such as the upcoming FIFA World Cup in the United States may provide an additional boost to dairy demand. Analysts suggest patience may be warranted as stronger consumption patterns emerge over the coming months.
