Riverview Dairy has two proposed dairy builds in North Dakota.
Riverview Dairy LLP has dairies with locations in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Arizona and New Mexico. They are now setting their eyes on North Dakota with two proposed builds in the state.
Their proposed build in Hillsboro , North Dakota, has been moving forward. Even so, there have been some burning questions from surrounding residents, such as what their water and manure plans are.
According to Martha Koehl, who works in the Riverview communications department, the Department of Environmental Quality has laid forth the rules they must follow concerning both water and manure at the proposed build site.
Last summer, Riverview held an open house for the Hillsboro community to come and ask any lingering questions they may have. They were also able to see what Riverview’s plans were once the dairy was built. The Hillsboro location is set to house 25,000 head of dairy cattle.
“It’s the same two topics, manure and water. Those are two things that, if mismanaged, are a concern. So that’s valid. And so again, we would just help people understand the manure management plan, how the state regulates manure, that runoff is not an option, water contamination, how the wells are regulated, and how water usage is monitored and regulated,” Koehl said.
After the DEQ approved Riverview’s Dairy permit on Jan. 3, the Dakota Resource Council and some Abercrombie Township residents filed a notice of appeal in South Central District Court in Burleigh County on Feb. 3.
Another question on many people’s minds is, how will Riverview be able to staff these two dairies, with almost 40,000 head of cattle combined in the state. When asked about worries on finding labor with the new administration’s crackdown on immigration, Riverview stated they aren’t worried.
“We use the TN visa, which is a professional work visa, and we use the H-2A visa, which is more of nine months out of the year, more of a farming visa,” Sonny Nickeson, a Riverview employee, said. “So it should be just fine.”
When asked about the ongoing issues with pushback in Abercrombie and the newly filed appeal, Riverview had no comment.
