Saputo is among Australian milk processing companies that have cut the price they pay farmers by 15 per cent.

It’s a chilling example of what the company would do to Canadian farmers were there no supply management system to protect them.

Saputo, Fonterra and Bega are the big processors who cut prices.

There is widespread sympathy for the farmers who have faced droughts, the COVID-19 pandemic, labour shortages, rising land prices and floods.

Ten milk processing plants have closed in the last 18 months, pressured by a 10 per cent increase in imports and reduced milk supplies. Exports have also declined by 17 per cent.

Saputo, based in Montreal, runs a global milk-processing business. It is the largest processor in Canada and its busiess has been built on cheeses.
