Global Dairy Processor Boosts Distribution Network in Southeastern Wisconsin.
Saputo Cheese USA Inc., a subsidiary of the global dairy processor Montreal-based Saputo Inc., has significantly expanded its operations in southeastern Wisconsin with the opening of a massive 311,000-square-foot cold storage distribution facility in Caledonia. Located approximately 15 miles south of Milwaukee within Caledonia Corporate Park, this new facility is a strategic move designed to bolster Saputo’s distribution network and support the company’s continued growth within the competitive agribusiness sector.
The new Caledonia distribution center is expected to create around 160 jobs over the next three years, encompassing skilled trades, logistics, and management roles. This investment builds upon Saputo’s previous expansion in the region; the company began operating a cheese packaging and distribution facility in Franklin just two years prior, which created over 650 jobs. The new cold storage facility demonstrates Saputo’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its supply chain and increasing its presence in the key dairy state of Wisconsin.
The development of the Caledonia facility was a collaborative effort, with Milwaukee-based Zilber Property Group leading the development in partnership with Saputo and various local collaborators. Cushman & Wakefield | Boerke handled site search and brokerage, while Pinnacle Engineering Group and Partners in Design Architects provided building design and engineering services. Riley Construction served as the general contractor, illustrating the scale of the project and the multi-party coordination required.
Darren Richter, a Saputo senior vice president, stated that “The opening of the Caledonia facility underscores our ongoing commitment to Wisconsin and marks a key step in strengthening our supply chain across the United States.” This sentiment was echoed by officials from the Village of Caledonia, Racine County Economic Development Corp., and Zilber, highlighting the positive local economic impact of this dairy industry investment.
As one of the world’s top 10 dairy processors and among the three largest cheese producers in the United States, Saputo’s strategic expansions are closely watched by the international dairy community and dairy economics analysts. While the company recently closed its Lancaster cheese plant in southwestern Wisconsin, eliminating 98 jobs, this new facility in Caledonia signifies a clear directional focus on optimizing its distribution capabilities and reinforcing its market position in the vital U.S. market.
