GB milk deliveries totalled 975 million litres in September, down 1.5% on September 2020, according to estimates based on our latest daily deliveries figures (to 2 October). This was also marginally lower (0.5%) than the 980m litres predicted in our September milk forecast. This is primarily due to a dip in deliveries mid-month.

Small dips aside, milk production is starting to gently increase in line with typical seasonal patterns. Average daily production at the end of September was 1.2% (0.4m litres) higher than at the start, suggesting we are past the trough. This supports what we have seen in calving profiles, where the slight shift to autumn block calving has moved the trough to earlier than it was historically – from October/November to August/September.

President-elect Donald Trump’s protectionist America-first policy had been well forecast, but the size of his victory, and the fact his Republican Party also controls the Senate and Congress, gives him extensive influence and power.
