Argentine Dairy Market: Exports Decline in July
In the first half of July 2024, Argentine dairy sector exports showed a decline compared to the last 15 days of June. The exported volume fell by 31.3%, reaching 8,166.99 tons, while the average price per ton slightly decreased from USD 3,393.23 to USD 3,322.82. Additionally, the number of export destinations dropped from 30 to 27. Despite this decline, the market continues to demonstrate a significant export capacity, albeit with less momentum than in previous weeks.

Argentina’s historical trend as one of the main exporters of WMP (Whole Milk Powder) in the region continues, driven by constant international demand (mainly to Brazil) and the installed capacity within the sector.
Permeate Whey stands out as the second most significant product in exports, with 1,328.80 tons, reflecting its growing importance in markets primarily in Asia, such as China, the Philippines, and Taiwan, along with markets here in Latin America.
Among the products with lower volumes, semi-hard and hard cheeses stand out with 1,112.28 and 557.30 tons, respectively, followed by butter with 538.28 tons. These products continue to play a crucial role in diversifying Argentina’s export offerings.
Regarding whey protein concentrates, WPC 35 and WPC 80 account for 645.10 and 167.64 tons, respectively. These specialized products are gaining ground, particularly in niches related to sports nutrition and functional foods.
Uruguayan Dairy Market: Price Increases, Less Volume Growth and Fewer Destinations
In the first half of August 2024, the Uruguayan dairy market experienced a 9.2% increase in the average total price, reaching USD 3,709.93 per ton. However, this price increase did not translate into growth in export volume. Instead, the total exported volume decreased by 7.3%, falling to 8,386.819 tons from the previous period’s 9,045.64 tons. Additionally, the number of export destinations dropped from 35 to 30. In summary, although the average prices of Uruguayan dairy products have risen, the market has seen a decline in the volume exported and the number of destinations, which could reflect adjustments in demand or export strategy.

Partially Demineralized Whey (D40%):
As mentioned earlier, exports decreased in total volume, but their distribution, compared to the previous period, is interesting to analyze. Whole milk powder saw an increase of more than 750 tons in the first half of August, driven by higher sales to target destinations, Brazil and Algeria.
This was not the case for skimmed milk powder, which saw a 50% decrease in export volume during this period. Cheese and butter remained at their usual levels, with some variations that were not very significant.
The product that showed a considerable change, with a significant drop in export volume, was D40 Whey. A total of 267 tons were exported, which is 1,000 tons less compared to the last half of July.
This decrease is linked to the smaller number of destinations served. In August, only three destinations were covered (Taiwan, Singapore, and the Philippines). In contrast, in the previous period, exports reached more than 10 international markets across Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
