Departing leadership at the research farm leaves behind a legacy of innovation, industry partnerships and on-farm results.

The leadership transition at Southern Dairy Hub marks the end of a significant chapter for one of New Zealand’s leading dairy research farms. Outgoing general manager Andrea Dixon said she was proud to leave after helping guide the hub through a period of strong industry recognition and operational growth.

During her time at the Southland-based dairy operation, Dixon oversaw major advances in research, farm performance and collaboration with the wider dairy industry. The hub strengthened its reputation as a centre for innovation, bringing together scientists, farmers and agribusiness partners to test new ideas aimed at improving milk production, environmental management and farm profitability.

A recent award received by the farm was seen as recognition of both the research team and the wider network supporting the project. Dixon said the achievement was especially meaningful because it came shortly before her departure, reflecting years of work to improve the farm’s systems and contribution to the dairy sector.

The departing manager said the research farm had played an increasingly important role in helping New Zealand dairy producers respond to changing expectations around sustainability, animal welfare and business resilience. Projects developed at the site have provided practical information that farmers can apply directly on their own operations.

Although Dixon is leaving to focus on family and the next stage of her career, she said she remains confident in the future of the hub and its ability to continue supporting the dairy industry. The transition comes at a time when research-led dairy farming is becoming more important than ever for producers facing higher costs, climate challenges and rising pressure to improve efficiency.
