Premier Jacinta Allan has announced a $13.5m package in support for farmers in 11 local government areas in Victoria’s southwest. The funds will help deliver on-farm infrastructure grants and increase the region’s resilience into the future in response to the current drought.

Up to $12.1m will be invested on-farm to help framers prepare their properties for increasing dry conditions. Eligible farmers will receive up to $5,000 as a grant to support water infrastructure upgrades to pipes, tanks, troughs, dams and stock containment areas as well as grain and fodder storage. The package also includes $1.43m investment in counselling and advice for farmers going through financial and emotional distress with the appointment of a dedicated Drought Regional Coordinator.

Australian Dairy Farmers welcomed the announcement, saying the investment will assist dairy farmers and their families grappling with “some of the driest seasonal conditions on record”.
