June is National Dairy Month—the perfect time to celebrate not only the dedicated dairy farmers but Wisconsin's signature dairy industry too.
Did you know that half of all specialty cheese made in the U.S. comes from Wisconsin?

It’s no wonder Wisconsin is known as America’s Dairyland. The state is recognized nationally and globally as a leader in the dairy industry. Its contributions also extend throughout the entire country.

Wisconsin is home to 23% of the nation’s total dairy farms and has the most comprehensive infrastructure to support them, making it a leader in dairy innovation. Wisconsin’s dairy industry generates $45.6 billion each year, which is more than the combined value of Florida citrus and Idaho potatoes. Wisconsin dairy farms help fuel the state’s economy by creating 154,000 jobs and generating $1.26 billion in state and local taxes. Plus, 95% of Wisconsin farms are family-owned.

When it comes to products, everyone knows Wisconsin Cheese is best in class. Wisconsin wins more awards than any other state or country. The state currently holds an award count of over 5,000 since 1995 and counting.

Did you know that half of all specialty cheese made in the U.S. comes from Wisconsin? The state is also the only one that requires a license to make cheese, making it home to 1,200 licensed cheesemakers who produce over 600 varieties, types and styles of cheese. That’s two times the number of any other state.

In 2018, Wisconsin produced over 30 billion pounds of milk—nearly 14% of the total U.S. milk production. Milk has fueled athletes for centuries, and especially now with upgraded nutrient credentials. Milk stands alone as the original sports drink, delivering a powerful combination of natural nutrients that aid muscle repair, rehydration and replenishment. It also helps to build strong bones and support immune health.

Be sure to look for the Proudly Wisconsin Cheese badge or the Proudly Wisconsin Dairy badge next time you’re purchasing dairy products to ensure you support your local dairy farmers.
