Each Memorial Day weekend, the heartland of America vibrates with excitement as engines roar to life for the world’s largest motor sports event. This is the Indianapolis 500, an enduring spectacle not only celebrated for its heart-stopping race but also for its charming victory tradition: the milk celebration. As the Indy cars blaze across the asphalt at breakneck speeds, anticipation swells for the winner’s dramatic splash in the victory circle.

The tradition of the Indy 500 winner sipping from an ice-cold bottle of milk began in 1936. Since then, it has been a symbolic victory ritual where the triumphant driver savors a few sips before exuberantly pouring the remainder over themselves, signifying triumph and tradition intertwined.

Meet the 2025 Milk Presenters: Dairy’s Delight

This cherished custom is orchestrated, in part, by Indiana’s dedicated dairy farmers, who take their roles in this ceremony seriously. In the 2025 installment, Abby Herr steps up as the Veteran Milk Presenter. Growing up on a small dairy farm in South Whitley, Ind., Herr has milk running through her veins. Today, she and her husband, Steve, operate Herr Dairy near Kendallville in Noble County. Passionate about dairy farming, Herr loves sharing her farm life stories and routines with the world through social media and tours.

Representing female dairy farmers at the 109th Indy 500, Herr takes great pride in her role, inspiring her daughters and future generations of dairy farmers.

Starting her journey as the Rookie Milk Presenter, Stockwell will learn under Herr’s expert guidance, as they both prepare for the marvelous celebrations set against the thrilling backdrop of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 110th Running of the Indy 500

This year, the 109th Indy 500 will take place on Sunday, May 25, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It promises another thrilling chapter in motor sports history, woven with the beloved tradition of the milk celebration — a testament to passion, speed and the bountiful pride of Indiana’s dairies.

As engines rev and anticipation climaxes, all eyes will inevitably turn to the winner’s circle, where another page of tradition will turn with a splash, courtesy of passionate dairy farmers like Herr and Stockwell.
