U.S. cheese production was up in April. USDA says total production excluding cottage cheese was 1.19 billion pounds, up 1.8% over last year but 3% below March. Italian type cheese production was 6.2% higher than a year ago at 504 million pounds, but 2.8% below March of this year. American cheese production was 4.7% below year-ago levels and 4.3% below March at 468 million pounds.
Butter production was below March by just over 1% but 5.3% higher than last April with 208 million pounds produced.
For the dry products, nonfat dry milk production fell 12.7% to 173 million pounds and skim milk powder production fell 20.8% to 36.3 million pounds compared to last April.
Dry whey production rose 2.1% while lactose and whey protein concentrate production were off 1.5% and 6.1% respectively.
Frozen dairy product production saw growth for hard ice cream by 7.3% to 64.7 million gallons, while low-fat ice cream, sherbet, and frozen yogurt production were all lower.
Wisconsin led the nation in Cheddar cheese production with 60.38 million pounds followed by California with 21.29 million pounds. California dominates the Mozzarella production with 134.14 million pounds of production followed by Wisconsin with 93.13 million pounds. Total cheese production is led by Wisconsin with 281.48 million pounds, followed by California, Idaho, and New Mexico.
