The U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) and National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) have voiced their strong opposition to Colombia’s recent preliminary ruling that targets U.S. dairy exporters with claims that U.S. milk powder is unfairly subsidized.
Colombia’s government has proposed a 4.86% tariff on U.S. milk powder exports, which the U.S. dairy groups assert is based on baseless allegations.
The USDEC and NMPF are urging U.S. trade officials to take swift action in response to Colombia’s decision, which they argue will harm not only U.S. exporters but also Colombian businesses that depend on U.S. dairy imports. USDEC President and CEO Krysta Harden stated, “These politically motivated allegations serve only to impose protectionist trade barriers and harm both countries.”
NMPF President and CEO Gregg Doud expressed disappointment in Colombia’s approach, highlighting that the country is not adhering to its trade commitments and instead moving forward with an unjustified investigation.
The preliminary tariff will be in effect for four months, during which further evidence will be collected. A public hearing will be held to review arguments, with the final decision potentially extending tariffs for up to five years.
