Excess supply and soft farmgate returns temper hopes of a quick rebound.

The UK dairy sector faces a slow and uneven recovery as farmgate milk prices continue to weaken amid ongoing supply imbalances and higher production volumes. According to analysts speaking at industry events and trade gatherings, prices have “bottomed out” in many commodity categories, but significant rallies in milk price are not expected until later in 2026, particularly after the spring flush when supply patterns begin to normalise.

Milk production remains a key factor in the downward pressure on prices. Industry specialists highlight that both domestic and global milk volumes have expanded — with UK production running well above year-earlier levels and expected to exceed 13 billion litres in the 2025-26 season — contributing to excess supply that processors are struggling to absorb.

Despite weak farmgate returns, there are early signs of commodity price stabilization. Reports note that values for products like skimmed milk powder and mild cheddar have shown modest gains, buoyed in part by renewed buyer interest from international markets including the Middle East and Asia. This has been reinforced by positive Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction results early in the year, hinting at potential shifts in global demand dynamics.

However, these commodity lifts have not yet translated into stronger farmgate prices, which remain under pressure as milk supplies outpace processing capacity. Industry analysts caution that prices could remain below breakeven for many producers through spring and into summer, especially for farms on conventional contracts without premium pricing alignment.

For dairy producers, the current market environment underscores the importance of managing supply and costs, as well as seeking contracts that offer premiums or stability against volatile market swings. While the dairy commodity complex shows early green shoots, the road to a broad and sustained price recovery is expected to be long and dependent on both domestic supply restraint and firmer global demand.
