US Dietary Guidelines Put Whole Dairy Back Center Stage

The 2025–2030 DGA reaffirm three daily servings of dairy and endorse whole-fat products as part of healthy eating patterns.

The 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), released by the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture, strongly reaffirm dairy’s role in national nutrition policy. The guidelines recommend three daily servings of dairy and explicitly support the inclusion of whole and full-fat dairy products, such as whole milk, yogurt and cheese, marking a significant shift from earlier low-fat-only guidance.

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. framed the update as a return to nutrient-dense, minimally processed foods, highlighting dairy alongside protein, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and whole grains. USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins emphasized that the guidelines also align nutrition policy with support for American farmers and ranchers, reinforcing dairy’s place in both public health and agricultural sustainability.

Industry groups welcomed the science-based approach. The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) praised the recognition that dairy at all fat levels supports healthy dietary patterns and consumer choice. According to IDFA, the updated guidance reflects evolving nutrition science showing that whole and full-fat dairy is linked to neutral or lower cardiovascular risk, less weight gain, and reduced childhood obesity risk.

The guidelines also highlight dairy as a high-quality protein source, delivering 13 essential nutrients, including vitamins and minerals critical to human health. IDFA noted that dairy stands alongside meat, eggs and seafood in protein recommendations, offering flexibility for diverse cultural, dietary and lifestyle needs across the U.S. population.

While broadly supportive, IDFA cautioned against the guidelines’ reference to “highly processed foods,” arguing the term lacks scientific consensus and could unintentionally discourage consumption of nutritious products like milk, yogurt and cheese. Both IDFA and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) stressed the importance of integrating the new dairy guidance into federal nutrition programs such as school meals, WIC and SNAP, ensuring broad access to whole, reduced-fat and full-fat dairy options.
