Robust Growth Signals Strong Supply Amid Rising Cow Numbers.
U.S. milk production continued its upward trajectory in June, marking another significant increase for the nation’s dairy industry. According to the USDA’s National Agriculture Statistics Service, milk output in the 24 major producing states reached 18.5 billion pounds, representing a robust 3.4% rise compared to June of the previous year. This consistent growth underscores the strength and productivity of the American dairy sector, setting a clear trend for dairy economics.
This positive trend is not isolated to June. The USDA also revised its May report, revealing a 2.4% year-over-year increase in milk production for that month, reaching 19.3 billion pounds. Cumulatively, the second quarter of 2025 saw overall milk production climb by 2.4% compared to the same period last year. This sustained growth in dairy output is a key indicator for agribusiness analysts monitoring supply dynamics in the international dairy market.
A major driver behind this increased production is the enhanced efficiency of dairy cows. Production per cow in these 24 leading states averaged 2,045 pounds in June, an impressive 33 pounds more than the previous June. This rise in individual cow productivity highlights ongoing improvements in farm management, genetics, and nutrition within the dairy farming community, contributing significantly to overall milk supply.
Furthermore, the average number of dairy cows in the major producing states also saw an increase during the second quarter of 2025, reaching 9.46 million head. This represents an expansion of 56,000 cows from the first quarter and a substantial increase of 127,000 cows compared to the second quarter of last year. California remains the top state with 1.71 million milk cows, followed by Wisconsin (1.26 million) and Idaho (711,000), while Michigan leads in milk-per-cow production at 2,300 pounds.
This continuous rise in U.S. milk production, fueled by both increasing cow numbers and improved per-cow output, provides a clear signal of ample supply in the market. For dairy producers, manufacturers, and analysts globally, these figures are crucial for forecasting commodity prices, planning processing capacities, and understanding the competitive landscape of the global dairy industry.
