The USDA is expected to provide new guidance on surveillance of bird flu in hopes of eliminating the virus from dairy herds.
“I have had chickens since the first grade,” Kitt Schaller, a veterinarian and self-described chicken enthusiast said.
Avian influenza or bird flu is often carried in migratory wild birds like ducks and geese. When it crosses over to domestic birds like chickens or turkeys, the mortality rate can be up to 100% within 48 hours.
“It is a possibility and something we need to watch out for,” Schaller said while holding one of her chickens.
“The idea is to stamp it out before it gets the chance to spread,” Ron Kean, a poultry specialist with UW-Extension said.
This policy is part of why the cost of eggs have been so high, Kean explained.
“We do see a large number going out of production and therefore the supply of eggs goes down,” Kean said.
While avian influenza continues to spread, labs like the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at UW-Madison are working ahead to be able to catch outbreaks before they happen.
“We are fully ready,” Keith Poulsen, the director of the lab said. “In this room we can manage thousands of samples a day.”
Although it has not happened in Wisconsin, the virus is now crossing over to dairy herds and in some cases, even people.
“The risk of this being a large public health risk are low, low, low but not zero,” Poulsen said.
