That’s an 8% jump over 2018 and a 25% increase over the last three years.The Dairy Foods Association saying it’s a level not seen since the high-water mark of 2014. Total volume was down 7% from 2018. Declines in volume exports were attributed to lost sales of whey and lactose to China due to tariffs and African swine fever.

Cheese export volumes were up 3% last year, the most in 5-years. And whole milk sales also seeing some improvement in 2019. DairyFoods.com is reporting whole milk was the only category to see positive grown last year up more than 2.5% in dollar and unit sales.

Data from IRI,a Chicago-based market research firm, shows four brands even posted double-digit gains. They are Cream O Land Dairy, Fairlife, Hood Lactaid, and Danone. Two of the top 10 whole-milk brands lost sales last year including Dean Foods’ DairyPure, which lost 4.6% of unit sales last year.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, chair of the Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, Poultry, Local Food Systems, and Food Safety and Security, praised the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) decision to reinstate the “higher of” Class I pricing formula for milk.
