The Wisconsin Farmers Union released the following statement regarding the recent layoffs and ongoing labor dispute at the W&W Dairy plant in Monroe, which was recently acquired by Dairy Farmers of America.

Wisconsin Farmers Union stands in solidarity with the dairy workers in Monroe, who went on strike earlier this month after the recent sale of W&W Dairy to Dairy Farmers of America and the imposition of new immigration verification requirements.  Immigrants play an essential role in sustaining Wisconsin agriculture; our dairy farms depend on a skilled and dedicated workforce, many of whom are immigrants, to keep year-round operations viable. When workers face threats to their dignity, stability, or livelihoods, our farms and rural communities suffer as well. This moment underscores the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform that protects workers’ rights, provides clear and humane pathways to legal status, and ensures a stable workforce for family farms.

The current H2A Temporary Agricultural Workers Visa is outdated and inflexible, only providing legal pathways for seasonal and temporary immigrant workers.  Passing bipartisan legislation like H.R.3227 Farm Workforce Modernization Act of 2025, would update critical farm labor policies and provide security for farmers and farm workers alike.

As an organization, we will continue to advocate for policies that respect the humanity of all workers while supporting the long-term health of Wisconsin agriculture.”

Thank you,

–Tommy Enright, Wisconsin Farmers Union
