Wisconsin dairy farmer survey released

Wisconsin’s ag secretary says a recent survey of the state’s dairy farmers helps guide the agency to better help them.

Randy Romanski tells Brownfield survey responses were consistent. “A very clear indication that soil and water health, animal health remain priorities for Wisconsin farmers.”

Romanski says another positive trend continued from the last survey. “Ninety-nine percent of all of the farmers that responded said that they were on family-owned operations. Wisconsin is the home to the family farm, and 97% of them said that they had one or more generations or family members working together.”

Romanski says the survey showed growth for some state-funded farmer initiatives. “Programs like the Producer-led Watershed Grant Program, wildly popular, growing in popularity, and the farmers are the ones bringing the successes to those operations.”

Romanski says he believes the state’s new cover crop reimbursement program is contributing to expansion of cover crop acres.

Romanski spoke to Brownfield during World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
