The $75 million development of Fonterra’s Studholme site into a high-value advanced protein factory, has reached a major milestone.
The foundations and walls of the new processing buildings at the South Canterbury plant, are now completed ahead of the arrival of new powder milling equipment later this month.
Construction of external processing equipment such as powder storage bins, batching tanks and a high-pressure pump has also begun.
Fonterra’s Studholme site manager, Alan Maitland says the site is buzzing with activity.
“It’s exciting to see this expansion starting to take shape. We’re making great progress, and once completed, this new plant will be a significant step forward for both the site and the co-op in delivering high-value advanced proteins for our global customers.”
The expansion will create six new roles.
Maitland says the development also sends a strong signal about the site’s importance to the co-op and its position as a key player in high-value dairy ingredient production.
The expansion was announced last August as a key part of Fonterra’s strategy to grow value through its ingredients business.
The advanced ingredients to be manufactured will used for medical nutrition and high-protein sports products using Fonterra’s formulation, with the first product expected in 2026.
