The Jammu and Kashmir administration has declared Jerry village in Reasi district as the first ‘Milk Village ‘ of the Union Territory . The administration has also approved 57 additional dairy farms for jerry under Integrated Milk Development Scheme ( IDDS ). Giving information in this regard on Thursday, the officials said that at present there are a total of 73 dairy farms in Jerry, of which 370 are cows. With the status of Milk Village, the local dairy operators will get financial security.

According to officials, in order to form a cluster of dairy farms, the women of the village have also formed a group of 11 women to collect milk from all the farms and deliver it to the vendors. A local farmer named Dheeraj said, “We have been able to convert Jerry into a milking village. The farmers of Reasi district headquarter inspect the dairy farm of the village.

Subsidy is given to dairy farms up to Rs 5 lakh

Officials of the Agriculture Department said that after the declaration of Milk Village, 57 dairy units have been approved for jerry under IDDS. Under this scheme, 50 percent subsidy (maximum Rs 5 lakh) is given to dairy units equipped with five cattle. They are also provided with milking, paneer-curd-khoya-ice cream making, cream separating and ghee-butter preparation machines and milk vans at affordable rates.

Reasi District Development Commissioner Charandeep Singh reached Jerry and inquired about the income status of the farmers there. Singh appealed to the farmers to motivate other people of the village to open dairy units. A senior official said that now the number of dairy farms in the village is increasing. In such a situation, new cooperative societies will be established here. Dairy farm operators will benefit from this step and milk will be collected and transported to the sales centers smoothly. The official said that the supply chain would be maintained with the help of the members of the cooperative societies.
