Several dairy companies are interested in producing A2 milk and are investing in its development and production. This is due to the growing demand for this type of milk.

A superfood is one that is high in nutrients and health benefits, and while A2 milk may have some advantages for some people, it is nutritionally, just as super as A1 milk.

What’s its secret?

A2 milk contains only the A2 beta-casein protein, and is easier to digest than conventional milk, which has a mixture of A1 and A2 proteins.

A bit of history

At first all cows produced only A2 protein, but about 1000 years ago, a cell mutation occurred in some dairy cows in Europe, and they began to produce A1 protein.

These cows became more productive and profitable, and spread around the world dominating the dairy market.

A question of breed

Today, A2 milk production is breed-dependent. Those originating in the Channel Islands and southern France, such as Guernsey, Jersey, Charolais and Limousin, are the main producers of A2 beta-casein-rich milk.

No artificial methods are used to alter the composition of the milk, but rather the natural ability of these cows to produce milk with this characteristic is exploited.

Discovery

In 1997, two New Zealand scientists, Corran McLachlan and Bob Elliott, discovered the difference between A1 and A2 proteins and founded the A2 Corporation, which developed a genetic test, using hair from the cows’ tails, to identify those that produced milk with only the A2 protein.

A week ago, a new test based on 1 drop of milk was presented at the 12th edition of AgroPonte in Brazil, which allows the classification of large herds quickly and cheaply.

The A2 Corporation began licensing milk producers and distributors to use the A2 name on their products, provided they met quality and traceability requirements.

A2 Milk was first introduced to the New Zealand market in 2003, and then expanded into Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China and India.

Today, A2 Milk Company is the global leader in the A2 Milk segment, turning over $1 billion in 2020.

In addition to A2 Milk Company, other dairy companies obtained licenses to use the A2 name on their products.

These include Lala and Santa Clara in Mexico, Piracanjuba, Verde Campo and Betânia in Brazil, Parmalat in Uruguay and CLALDY in Uruguay and Chile.

In Argentina, Lácteos La Delfina is the only local company dedicated to the production of dairy products made with A2 buffalo milk; and Nestlé, a Swiss multinational that invested US$ 16.5 million to develop and produce organic milk and A2 milk locally in alliance with 25 dairy farms in Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Entre Ríos.

There are several dairy companies that are interested in producing A2 milk and are investing in its development and production. This is due to the growing demand for this type of milk from consumers who value its characteristics.

Some people may have difficulty digesting the A1 protein, which is associated with the release of a substance called beta-casomorphin-7, which can cause intestinal discomfort.

Because it does not have this protein, A2 milk does not produce this substance, which can improve digestion and prevent these symptoms.

The consumption of A2 milk is an option for sensitive people who suffer from digestive discomfort, but who do not have an allergy to milk proteins or lactose intolerance.

A2 milk is rich in minerals, protein, calcium and phosphorus, and is beneficial in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, strengthening the immune system, boosting brain power and helping to prevent many chronic diseases.

Some sources indicate that A2 milk may have a milder flavor and creamier texture compared to conventional milk, which may make it more appealing for some preparations such as smoothies or desserts. From a nutritional point of view, there is no difference between A1 milk and A2 milk.

Participation of A2 milk in the international market

A2 milk is traded in the international market. According to Expert Reports analysts, the global A2 milk market reached a value of nearly $1.9 billion and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10.70% during the forecast period 2023-2028.

In addition, large companies are collaborating with startups and joint ventures to better develop their products and expand their market presence.

The global A2 milk market share is growing at an exponential rate due to changing consumption habits towards more nutritious foods with more appealing properties.

The consumption of all dairy products, as long as they are legitimate, brings unparalleled health benefits due to their content of essential nutrients. Consuming dairy products is good for you! Don’t hesitate to include them in your diet.
