The Unified Dairy Mark was launched under the CAS, which was notified by the BIS on December 8. The initiative undertaken by the department of animal husbandry and dairying demonstrates quality and food-safety in the dairy sector by bringing about process improvement. It will help improve consumer confidence in dairy products manufactured and retailed in India and ensure consistency in implementation of food safety across the dairies.
The NDDB and the BIS have been involved in the certification of processes and products, respectively. While NDDB has been awarding ‘Quality Mark’ to various dairy plants of cooperatives that adhere to the process standards across the dairy value chain, the BIS has been providing product certification for various milk products being under the mandatory product certification of BIS for products.
The CAS will simplify the certification process and the easily recognizable logo will reassure consumers about the quality of the dairy product and in turn, increase sales thereby augmenting the income of dairy farmers associated with this sector.
